In God We Trust

I suppose this is true enough. Although, it is probably more true today than yesterday. Or, maybe that’s just me. You see, trust isn’t my strong suit. That whole “trust fall” thing. No thanks. Trusting, in life, is difficult enough without manufacturing ways to add to that. Sheesh.

However…however, let it be said for the tallybooks (McClintock shoutout) that I understand the trust fall; I just don’t like it as a means to help me along. In Psalm 118 we read many great things-but one in particular I wish to point out. Verse 8. “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.” Yep, it’s about that simple. Except it’s not. Of course this is so true, isn’t it? People let you down. You let you down. There are times in life where trust is broken in very real and significant ways and it doesn’t come back. Or at least come back quickly. And in some cases, that’s quite ok. Trust can be instant, it can take time to build up, or it can take years to get back.

For the Jesus follower, though, trust isn’t optional. And sometimes trusting God means trusting people. Or going ahead with ministering to someone when there isn’t any trust present for miles. Sometimes following Jesus means this: Taking up Refuge (enclosed all around inside something-think The Love of God) versus open-sided Trust (think Risk-there’s a chance for disappointment where folks are concerned). I understand we can become disappointed in God, too, but that’s just when my self-centeredness becomes more prominent than His plans. It happens…..

In these days of many voices calling for your trust, go forth and step into the enclosure friends!
